Description
Breeding waders are in drastic decline; with some wader species at critically low populations. Predation is a major risk factor for these ground nesting birds with mammalian (red fox, mink) and avian (such as grey crow) predation a key factor to the decline. The NPWS are engaging contractor(s) for predation risk management services for target species which are in decline, specifically Qualifying Interests (QIs) of Lough Ree and Roscommon section of the Middle Shannon Callows SPAs. Core areas where breeding bird populations must be prioritised Shoreline areas where predation risk management will benefit the core areas Protection methods include: control of predators, habitat management, assisting NPWS in bird survey work, local engagement, education and awareness and working as part of the NPWS staff team of the Midlands Region.
