Stația 220 kV Ostrovu Mare va fi amplasată în județul Mehedinți, lângă stația existentă 110/20/6 kV Ostrovu Mare, care se găsește în imediata vecinătate a CHE Porțile de Fier II. Analiza energetică a zonei Porţile de Fier I, Cetate, Calafat, Halânga și Porţile de Fier II - Gogoşu a scos în evidență necesitatea schimbării soluţiei de evacuare a energiei produse în CHE Porţile de Fier II către SEN prin realizarea unei staţii noi de conexiuni 220 kV la Ostrovu Mare, racordată printr-o LEA de 220 kV dublu circuit nouă la LEA 220 kV d.c. existentă Porţile de Fier – Cetate (circuitul 1). Aceasta presupune, pe lângă lucrările specifice de construcţii si montaj echipamente primare, implementarea unui sistem (de ultimă generaţie) de comandă-control, protecţie, automatizări și metering în staţia nou creată, cu respectarea strategiilor Transelectrica privitoare la teleconducere staţiilor electrice din RET, respectiv asigurarea telecomenzii de la nivelul Centrului de Telecomanda si Supraveghere Instalaţii din cadrul Sucursalei de Transport Craiova.
