Description

The Mount Zion Apostolic Church is a vital community hub which provides essential support and services to thousands of vulnerable and disadvantaged people in one of the most disadvantaged localities in Britain. The Mount Zion Apostolic Church is a Grade II listed building originally designed by Reginald Cooper as a cinema in the 1930s. Of the 13 cinemas designed by Cooper throughout the Midlands and Yorkshire, 8 have been demolished, 3 still exist but are closed or vacant, and only one still operates as a cinema. The building of Mount Zion has drawn comment from Historic England for the intact nature of the interior decoration, which is a rare survival in cinemas of this age and type. The Trust were successful in securing Delivery Phase funding from The Heritage Fund to deliver the "Picturing the Past" project to redevelop the building, showcase its heritage and deliver the community engagement programme.
