Description
Taunton Town Council declared a climate and ecological emergency and aims to reach carbon neutrality by 2030. Taunton Town Council oversees 14 open spaces within the parish with around 1,300 mature trees under its care. Planting more trees is a sustainable way to improve the health of our town. Trees play a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance and tackling climate change. They act as carbon sinks, absorbing atmospheric carbon dioxide, a key greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. By absorbing carbon, trees really help to mitigate the impacts of climate change. In addition to their climate benefits, trees enhance our ecosystems. They provide habitat for a wide variety of species, contributing to biodiversity. They also play a vital role in the water cycle, helping to prevent flooding and soil erosion, and maintaining groundwater levels. Furthermore, trees improve air quality by filtering harmful pollutants and releasing oxygen. They also provide shade and cooling, which can reduce energy use in buildings, and contribute to human well-being through their aesthetic and recreational value.
