Description
With the growing interest in offshore wind energy around Ireland, there is an increasing demand for a more detailed understanding of the rock types that are exposed on and underly the Irish seabed. In 2016, Geological Survey Ireland (GSI) contributed a coarse offshore bedrock map to EMODnet Geology*, providing a valuable baseline for geological assessments – this was based on available data and studies at the time. However, this existing map is no longer fit for purpose and does not meet the evolving requirements of Ireland’s maritime aspirations. Advances in geological studies, marine surveys, and offshore infrastructure planning since 2016 necessitate an updated and refined offshore bedrock geological map. Incorporating new data and insights will enhance site selection, foundation design, and overall project feasibility, supporting the sustainable expansion of Ireland’s offshore renewable energy sector, in addition to an improved understanding of Ireland’s offshore geology across a range of sectors. It is proposed here to update GSI’s current offshore bedrock geology map for the Irish and Celtic seas (where most offshore renewable energy activity is taking place in the coming yea…
