Description

This contract covers the supply of an atmospheric profiler (Automatic LIDAR Ceilometer, ALC) that can detect and identify the type of cloud base (liquid/solid) and aerosol plumes using LIDAR technology with polarization from the ground for the Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium (RMI). The RMI currently operates a network of 5 (ALC, without polarization technology), most of which are more than 10 years old and need to be gradually replaced. Over the last five years, an increase in the intensity and frequency of atmospheric episodes transporting sand from the Sahara to Belgium has been observed, as well as an increase in the frequency of smoke plumes reaching Belgium originating from forest fires in the northern hemisphere. The presence of these aerosol plumes at high altitudes can sometimes affect air quality at ground level. The identification and characterization of these aerosol plumes at altitude (using polarization technology) is therefore crucial to quickly meet the expectations of RMI partners concerned with air quality. The objectives of RMI are: - to measure the height of the cloud base. - to determine the height of the mixing layer (a key parameter in predicting …
