Som byggkonstruktör ska man behärska Projektering och beräkning av Byggnadskonstruktioner, statistik och dimensioneringar, i både om- och nybyggnadsprojekt. Uppdrag/projekt kan bestå i allt från Förstudie till Relationshandling med tillhörande Program/Systemhandling och Förfrågningsunderlag/Bygghandling. Även uppdrag med inventeringar och upprättande av relationsritningar ingår. Även undersökningar av befintliga konstruktioner, och grundförutsättningar på tomt kan förekomma.
