Description
The National Monuments Service of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage has responsibility for the formulation and implementation of policy relating to the protection of Ireland's archaeological heritage and is committed to conserving and managing our unique built heritage for the benefit of present and future generations, as a support to economic renewal and sustainable employment, and in compliance with legal obligations. Archaeological excavations carried out by the National Monuments Service at Dublin Castle have provided information critical to our understanding of the development of this premier national monument and have also thrown light on the Viking settlement and early formation of the medieval walled town of Dublin. The excavations, directed by Dr. Ann Lynch and Conleth Manning were carried out between 1985 and 1987 to facilitate a major building programme for the Irish EU Presidency of 1989 and were among the largest-scale excavations carried out in Ireland up to that time.
