Description

The Centre will stand as a site of conscience that will honour equally all those who were resident in Industrial Schools, Reformatories, Magdalen Laundries, Mother and Baby Homes and related institutions. It will comprise the following: The provision of the National Centre Museum and Research Centre (total circa 7510m2) with a purpose built archival repository/storage space (circa 4,030m2, 3-4 storeys over circa 1,300m2 basement). This will comprise the restoration and remodelling of the existing convent blocks and chapel (circa 3,5490m2). There will also be a new L shaped building, which will enclose a garden of reflection. The National Centre will include extensive document repositories at basement levels; exhibitions spaces, conservation laboratories, and technical spaces at ground level; and public reading rooms at first floor level; The provision of a new multi storey multi-functional Educational Facility (circa 3,690m2 of new 3-5 storey building over basement) comprising of large and small teaching rooms, study spaces, offices, social space to support further and higher education.
