Description
De afdeling Nucleaire Geneeskunde en Moleculaire Beeldvorming van het Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen (UMCG) heeft ruime ervaring in de ontwikkeling en produceren van PET-tracers en het toepassing ervan in een preklinische en klinische onderzoekomgeving. De afdeling beschikt over een eigen cyclotron voor de productie van kortlevende PET-isotopen, speciale radio-chemische laboratoria voor de ontwikkeling van tracers, een GMP-faciliteit voor de productie voor humaan gebruik, en state-of-the-art (pre-)klinische beeldvormingsapparatuur. FDG (Fluor-18-gefluorideerd deoxyglucose) is een onmisbare radioactieve tracer voor PET-diagnostiek in het UMCG. Het helpt bij het opsporen en monitoren van oncologische, neurologische en cardiovasculaire aandoeningen. Jaarlijks worden ongeveer 7.200 patiëntdoseringen FDG geproduceerd en gebruikt voor diagnostiek. Door de vergrijzing en een toename van kankerdiagnoses zal de vraag naar FDG PET-scans naar verwachting verder toenemen. Dit maakt een stabiele en betrouwbare productie van FDG essentieel voor zowel patiëntenzorg als voor wetenschappelijk onderzoek.
