Description
Project background The ongoing conflict in Ukraine generates considerable amounts of debris stemming from damaged buildings, structures and municipal infrastructure, where these amounts of debris put workers at health risks and charge the affected municipalities with requirements for demolition, removal of debris and safe handling. With a historically widespread use of asbestos in Ukraine, the presence of asbestos in debris is a growing concern for human health risks. Safe and environmentally responsible handling of debris is a prerequisite for Ukraine's ambitions for safe and green extraction, but there are very limited examples of such waste handling and equivalent limited ability to handle the waste. Therefore there is an urgent need to ensure the extraction process from asbestos waste management. The aim of this project is to support the various government offices and the private sector of Ukraine in dealing with asbestos-containing debris arising from the conflict in an environmentally responsible manner that underpins a green recovery, as well as leading to a more robust management of construction and demolition waste for the future.
