Beschreibung

The core objective of procurement is to remediate a contaminated site at 10 Dzelzceļa Street, Aizkraukle, Latvia, where a former reinforced concrete factory (operated 1968-1990) has polluted the topsoil and groundwater with viscous oil products (mainly fuel oil). The contamination has created a 2.7-hectare "floating oil" layer on the groundwater, which is migrating towards the Daugava River. The main challenges are posed by geological conditions of the territory (dolomite layer) and proximity to critical infrastructure (hydropower plant). To address this, remediation works focus on three key actions: - minimizing sources of contamination to prevent further release of pollutants from the contaminated site into groundwater and further spread of contamination into the affected area, the Daugava River; - cleaning up the contaminated site to a level that does not endanger the health of the population or the quality of the environment; - ensuring the sustainability of the results so that the site remains clean and safe long after the remediation work is complete.
