Description
In alignment with the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015, tackling the issue of empty homes aids in delivering the seven goals and five ways of working identified in the Act. Bringing empty homes back into use can boost the economy, enhances social values and decrease vandalism, crime, antisocial behaviour and drug use leading to safer more vibrant communities. Additionally, empty homes represent a squandered resource during a national housing shortage and rising homelessness. The latest statistics show that there are 22,634 chargeable long-term empty homes in Wales. While many are legitimately empty due to estate issues and restoration, many others are dormant and could be brought back into use reasonably quickly thus providing homes for people in need. Both the Scottish and UK Governments have developed handbooks for their respective Local Authorities, and now there is a real demand for a handbook tailored to the unique legal, social and economic context of Wales.
