Description

In a strategic move announced during a press conference on November 30. 2023, Danmarks Nationalbank revealed its initiatives to ensure the continued relevance of cash in Denmark. Recognizing the enduring importance of cash transactions, efforts are being made to enhance the safety and efficiency of banknotes, aligning them with technological advancements. Danmarks Nationalbank is set to issue a new banknote series, anticipated around 2028-2029, with a commitment to phasing out older series. All banknote series, except the current 2009 and 2009A series featuring bridges and artifacts, will be rendered invalid after May 31, 2025. Notably, the up-coming series will exclude a 1000-kroner note, which is the highest denomination, and the existing 1000-kroner note will cease to be valid currency in Denmark after May 31. 2025. This endeavor marks a significant shift for Danmarks Nationalbank, renowned for its longstanding tradition of independently managing banknote design within the expansive original department once situated at Havnegade 5 in Copenhagen.
