Description

ECOWAS Regional Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERERA) has the mandate of regulating cross-border electricity exchanges, creating an enabling investment environment for regional power projects and providing technical support to national regulators of the electricity sector of ECOWAS Member States. The creation of a regional electricity market consisting of countries with varying and wide differences in the status of their national markets has been a major challenge. The disparity in the level of development of national markets brought ERERA to work towards a legal mandate for a basic degree of harmonization by all member States for the establishment and operationalization of an integrated electricity market. These minimum harmonisation criteria were captured in the legal document known as the Directive on the Organisation of the Regional Electricity Market enacted by the ECOWAS Council of Ministers on 21/06/2013.
