Lapin hyvinvointialueen lääkäritehtäviä hoidetaan ensisijaisesti virkatyönä, mikäli virkalääkäreitä on saatavilla. Toiminnan jatkuvuuden turvaamiseksi Lapin hyvinvointialue hankkii tarvittavan osan lääkärityöstä henkilöstövuokrauksena tekemällä siitä määräaikaiset hankintasopimukset.
