Description

The scientific impact of radio astronomy will be revolutionised over the next decade by the construction and deployment of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA). The SKA will open up new discovery spaces across fundamental physics and astronomy with a combination of unprecedented sensitivity, survey speed and image fidelity. MeerKAT is an SKA precursor built in South Africa to prove techniques and technologies ahead of SKA deployment. The 64-dish MeerKAT array was fully inaugurated in July 2018 and is proving to be one of the most sensitive and highest imaging fidelity radio arrays yet built. Until MeerKAT is incorporated into the core of SKA-MID, it will be the premier international radio array in the southern hemisphere. The objective of this project is to improve frequency coverage capability of MeerKAT by installing 64 SKA Band 5b receivers (covering 8.3 –15.4 GHz) onto the telescope. These receivers will bring immense scientific capabilities and benefits: such as delivering world-leading facilities.
