De primaire taken van Fijnmechanische Dienst (FMD) (en de Elektronische Dienst (ELD)) zijn het bedenken, ontwerpen, vervaardigen, modificeren en repareren van instrumentatie en apparatuur ten behoeve van het wetenschappelijk onderzoek.
