Project Overview for Zanzibar"s Water Security Enhancement Project Title: Strengthening Water Security in Zanzibar (ZanziWaS) Country: Tanzania (Zanzibar) Primary Focus: This project aims to strengthen the political-administrative framework and implement technical improvements in water and wastewater management across Zanzibar"s two main islands, Unguja and Pemba. The 3-year project is scheduled to be completed mid-2027. Context and Objectives: ZanziWaS is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). The project addresses Zanzibar"s water management challenges through technical cooperation focusing on strengthening governance, building capacity and refining technical solutions. A primary goal is to create sustainable structures for integrated water and wastewater management, fostering climate resilience and gender equality in water security efforts. This initiative supports Zanzibar"s Vision 2050 for sustainable development, especially within its blue economy strategy.
