Description
The Syrian crisis continues to be one of the world"s most complex humanitarian and protection emergencies and displacement crises. As a result of the crisis, Jordan hosts over a million of Syrians, with around 650.000 officially registered as refugees with UNHCR. Around 20% of these registered refugees live in camps, including the Azraq refugee camp. A large-scale return in the short term is unlikely as the situation in Syria does not yet allow them to return in safety and dignity. International donors, including the EU and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), have set up measures to support Jordan in its efforts to cope with the situation including support to the development of a wastewater treatment solution At present, the Azraq refugee camp does not have a functioning wastewater treatment plant and the camp"s untreated wastewater is transported by tanker trucks over a 76 km distance to the Ain Ghazzal wastewater plant at high financial and ecological cost.
