Description
Healthy soils are the foundation of agricultural production. Moreover, healthy soils provide a wide range of ecosystem services such as water retention, biodiversity conservation and carbon sequestration. This is the focus of the global programme "Soil Protection and Rehabilitation for Food Security" (ProSoil) implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) since 2015. The intervention area is the three counties of Bungoma, Kakamega and Siaya located between the slopes of Mt. Elgon and Lake Victoria. In 2021, ProSoil received additional co-funding from BMZ and the European Union"s (EU) "Development of Smart Innovation through Research in Agriculture" (DeSIRA) program. The action is themed "Enhancing soils and agroecology for resilient agri-food systems in Western Kenya" (ProSilience). Its specific objective is to enhance the agroecological transformation towards sustainable agri-food systems within its partner countries.
